Feldene (piroxicam) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) effective at relieving inflammation and pain. Though often marketed as a treatment for arthritis, it is useful in relieving pain and inflammation from a wide variety of causes, similar to ibuprofen or aspirin.

Piroxicam is sold under a wide range of brand names; Feldene is the most widely known in the US, Canada, Australia and much of the EU. In other regions patients may buy Feldene as Fasden, Dolonex, Roxam, Brexidol and many other brands. In most areas it's also possible to buy Feldene as a generic.

The vast majority of patients buy Feldene as capsules or tablets. A topical gel is also available, though not commonly used as it has limited applications.

In many respects, including side effects, Feldene is similar to other NSAIDs. It may be used sporadically as-needed, such as to treat the occasional headache, or it may be taken continuously to treat chronic conditions, such as arthritis. In all cases:

• Avoid laying down for at least 10 minutes after taking Feldene.
• Take each dose with a full glass of water.
• Food is optional, but often prevents stomach-related side effects. Milk or antacids may also prevent stomach upset.
• Avoid taking other NSAIDs during treatment with Feldene. NSAIDs are very commonly found in over-the-counter products, such as cold or flu treatments. Check ingredients carefully!

Duration of treatment in chronic conditions such as arthritis can vary considerably. Ideally Feldene should be used at the lowest dose possible for the shortest time possible, but as long as no serious side effects are developing the risk of adverse effects is generally preferable to living with chronic pain.

Warnings & Side Effects

Some patients are more likely to experience severe side effects and should use this medication with caution, particularly those with a history of:

• Allergic reaction to other NSAIDs
• Asthma
• Blood disorders
• Heart disease
• Heart attack or stroke
• High blood pressure
• Liver or kidney disease
• Severe heartburn
• Ulcers
• Bleeding in throat, stomach or intestines

Common side effects are similar to those encountered with any NSAID, including upset stomach, headache, dizziness and mild drowsiness.

Rarely more serious side effects may develop, which warrant medical attention:

• Difficulty swallowing
• Swelling of ankles, feet or hands
• Tinnitus (ringing in ears)
• Unexplained neck stiffness
• Changes in urine volume
• Severe stomach pain
• Jaundice
• Vision changes
• Extreme fatigue

The above side effects, though serious, are quite rare and may be experienced with any NSAID.
